WordPress Classifieds Plugin or Theme? How to Choose Between Them

WordPress Classifieds Plugin or Theme? How to Choose Between Them

Most people who search for a WordPress classifieds plugin are in one of two places. Some already run a site, a town magazine or a club or a hobby blog, and want a page where readers can post ads. Others want the ads board to be the site, and they will be charging for listings from the first week. A plugin suits the first group well. For the second it can still work, but the money features sit behind licences that renew every year, and that changes the sums.

This guide is for making that call. On 7 October 2026 I pulled install counts, ratings and update dates for five classifieds plugins from the WordPress.org API, read their pricing pages and support threads, and set them against the theme route, including our own Classifieds theme.

Plugin or theme

Four questions settle it for most people.

First, does the site already exist and do other jobs? If it is a news site or a community blog and the ads are one section, use a plugin. A classifieds theme would replace your whole design to add one page.

Second, what will you charge for? Free ads with an optional PayPal fee work in the free versions of Classified Listing and AWP Classifieds. Card payments, featured or "top" ads, bump-ups and seller memberships are where the yearly licences start. For one site taking Stripe payments with featured ads, the first year costs $39 for Classified Listing Pro, $149 for the WPAdverts plan that includes Stripe, $69 for dClassified on Directorist, $149.50 for AWP Classifieds Pro, or nothing extra for HivePress if you are happy to run WooCommerce. Each of those renews. A classifieds theme bought on ThemeForest is around $59 once, and ours is $99 once.

Third, how many boards? WPAdverts' entry plan covers three sites. Most of the others charge per site and sell unlimited tiers at $244 to $299 a year, and AWP Classifieds' unlimited plan goes to $499 after the first year.

Fourth, who will maintain it? A plugin on a general theme means two vendors, two update cycles and CSS work to make the ad pages match the rest of the site. A dedicated theme is one product, but moving away from it later means exporting listings out of its own fields. Classified Listing has the gentlest exit, because Classima, a $59 theme, runs on the same engine.

Classified Listing

Classified Listing plugin demo on the Classilist theme showing an ad page with location, category and keyword search and a seller contact box

RadiusTheme's plugin is the one I would install first on an existing site. The free version handles front-end posting, categories, custom fields and search, and it takes money through PayPal or offline payment, which is enough to charge a posting fee from day one. The demo runs it on their Classilist theme, where the ad page has a location, category and keyword search bar, a click-to-reveal phone number and buttons to chat with or email the seller.

Stripe, Authorize.net and WooCommerce payments are Pro, and so are top ads, bump-ups, seller subscriptions and the live chat in that demo. Pro is $39 a year for one site at the moment, regularly $49. The bundle with every add-on and theme is $99 a year, unlimited sites cost $244 a year, and a one-site lifetime bundle is $279. One 2023 reviewer said Pro was buggy and support never answered a refund request. The free plugin has 9,000+ active installs and a 4.8 average from 138 ratings, 127 of them five stars, and was last updated on 23 September 2026.

Pros

  • Takes PayPal and offline payments without paying anything
  • Same engine as the Classima theme, so you can switch design later and keep your ads
  • Updated every few weeks

Cons

  • Stripe, top ads, bump-ups and chat need Pro
  • Yearly renewal unless you buy the lifetime bundle
  • A Pro buyer reported no reply and no refund

WPAdverts

WPAdverts demo classifieds page on a plain default theme with keyword and location search and an 11-ad grid

WPAdverts adds three things to whatever theme you run, a posting form, an ads list and a single-ad page, and then leaves your design alone. The demo makes that clear. It sits on a plain default WordPress theme with a keyword and location search over a grid of 11 test ads, and the demo copy I opened was set to delete itself a week later. The free core includes a payments log, a bank transfer gateway and charges for renewing expired ads, and it lets people post without an account.

Nearly everything else is sold in three plans, and every plan comes as yearly or lifetime. Start-Up, at $59 a year or $179 lifetime for three sites, adds PayPal, fees per category and reCAPTCHA. Stripe, WooCommerce, custom fields and maps are on Professional at $149 a year or $449 lifetime, and memberships only arrive with Professional Plus at $299 a year. Turn moderation on before launch. In a 2021 support thread one owner found 700+ spam ads, and the fix was a shortcode setting. WPAdverts has 4,000+ active installs and a 4.8 average from 160 ratings, and was last updated on 2 September 2026, though it is only marked as tested up to WordPress 7.0.7.

Pros

  • Lightest footprint on your existing design
  • Lifetime licences on every plan
  • The cheapest plan already covers three sites

Cons

  • Custom fields and maps are on the $149 plan
  • Ads publish straight away unless you switch moderation on
  • A 2024 thread had paid featured ads stuck as "processing" in WooCommerce
  • Not yet marked as tested on the newest WordPress release

HivePress

HivePress with the free ListingHive theme showing a for-sale laptop listing with price, reply button, reviews and a map

HivePress is a listings framework more than a classifieds plugin, and you see it at its best with the free ListingHive theme from the same team. Their demo listing is a laptop for sale at $800 with a Reply to Listing button, star reviews, a favourites heart and a map. Messages, reviews, favourites, geolocation and claim listings are all free extensions. So are captcha, email verification and listing moderation, which the core already includes.

Charging for listings is free as well, through the Paid Listings extension, but that runs on WooCommerce, so card payments come from WooCommerce's own gateways. Search alerts, memberships and the marketplace are $39 each, and every extension together is $99 a year. Budget for some development time. A May 2026 reviewer who gave it three stars praised the code and the free tier, then said most changes beyond the defaults needed CSS and often PHP. HivePress has 10,000+ active installs and a 4.9 average from 221 ratings, and it was updated on the day I checked, 7 October 2026.

Pros

  • More free features than any other option here
  • Paid listings cost nothing beyond WooCommerce
  • Free ListingHive theme with 9,000+ installs and a 5.0 rating
  • Moderation and email verification in the core

Cons

  • Needs WooCommerce to take any payment
  • Customising beyond the defaults often means code
  • Search alerts and memberships are paid

Directorist

dClassified theme for Directorist showing an all listings grid with filters, map toggle and item condition labels

Directorist has twice the installs of anything else here, and it is a directory plugin first. That makes it the sensible pick when you need business listings and second-hand ads on one site. The free core takes offline payments, and PayPal, Stripe and pricing plans are paid extensions. For a classifieds look, wpWax sells the dClassified theme, which needs the plugin and bundles pricing plans, PayPal, Stripe and live chat. Its listings page has filters, a map toggle and a condition label, new or used, on every card.

dClassified costs $69 a year for one site, $139 for five or $249 for unlimited, and all three renew. The plugin's rating is the lowest of the five at 4.6 from 698, and 43 of those are one star. The same reviewer who found HivePress code-heavy left a long review here in May 2026, saying the plugin's styling fought his theme and big updates wiped his changes, until he gave up and built his own. Directorist has 20,000+ active installs and was last updated on 6 October 2026.

Pros

  • Largest install base of the five
  • Directory and classifieds on one plugin
  • dClassified bundles chat, plans, PayPal and Stripe

Cons

  • Yearly licence for the theme and the paid features
  • 43 one-star reviews on WordPress.org
  • Some owners say updates overwrote their customisations

AWP Classifieds

AWP Classifieds demo with Place Ad, Browse Ads and Search Ads buttons and For Sale and Help Wanted categories

AWP Classifieds, once called Another WordPress Classifieds Plugin, has been on WordPress.org since 2009 and is now owned by Strategy11, the company behind Formidable Forms. It is the closest thing here to Craigslist itself. Buyers contact sellers through a blind email form, ads can need admin approval before they go live, and you can set fees by duration, say 30 days for $10 and 60 days for $15, or sell ad credits. The free version charges through PayPal. The demo is plain on purpose, with Place Ad, Browse Ads and Search Ads buttons over a list of categories.

Stripe, featured ads and extra fields start on the Pro plan, which covers five sites for $149.50 in the first year and $299 after that. The Basic plan only adds PayPal features.

Check the version before you install. Two unauthenticated SQL injection flaws were published this year, one in May affecting versions up to 4.4.5 and a critical one in July affecting versions up to 4.4.7. Both are fixed, and the current release is 4.4.9 from 5 October 2026. The plugin has 3,000+ active installs and a 4.6 average from 301 ratings.

Pros

  • Fees by ad duration and credit packs in the free version
  • Blind email contact keeps sellers' addresses private
  • Admin approval for ads and images

Cons

  • Two SQL injection flaws in 2026, now patched
  • Stripe and featured ads start at $299 a year after year one

Theme options

If the board is the business, a classifieds theme puts the ad engine, search, member area and design in one download. We compare them in detail in other posts, so this section sticks to how each one relates to the plugins above.

Classima

Classima is the natural next step from the Classified Listing plugin, because it runs on Classified Listing Pro and its Store add-on, which come with the theme. It costs $59 with 6,876 sales, a 4.86 rating from 409 reviews and an update on 24 August 2026. WooCommerce is optional. There is also a free sibling, CL Classified, on WordPress.org. Our Classima alternatives post covers where it falls short.

AdForest

AdForest, also $59, has 9,190 sales and a 4.65 rating from 805 reviews, and it was updated on 29 July 2026. Packages and paid ads go through WooCommerce, and it is the only option here with Android and iOS apps. The two are compared side by side in AdForest vs Classima.

ListingHive

ListingHive is the free way to make HivePress look like a classifieds site, and it is the cheapest route in our guide to building a Craigslist-style site. Seven themes, from Classiads to ClassiPress, are in the wider classifieds themes comparison.

PremiumPress Classifieds (ours)

PremiumPress Classifieds Theme Depot design for business and office equipment ads with keyword and postcode search

This is our theme, so weigh what follows accordingly. It is the theme route with nothing left to bolt on. Paid ad packages, featured upgrades, memberships, custom fields per category, a make-an-offer button and postcode radius search are switched on from one admin area, and 30+ payment gateways ship with it, so there is no WooCommerce and no add-on renewal. The demo has 42 designs. The Depot one, for office equipment, opens with a keyword and postcode search and a "Post an ad" button in the header.

It costs $99 once and covers every classifieds site you own, with six months of updates and support. After that you can extend for $49 per six months, or keep using the version you have. It replaces your current design rather than adding a section to it, it has no mobile apps, and listings live in the theme's own fields, so leaving means an export. There is a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Pros

  • Card payments, featured ads and memberships with no add-ons
  • One payment covers unlimited sites you own
  • No WooCommerce needed

Cons

  • Replaces your existing design
  • No Android or iOS apps
  • Moving away later means migrating listings

Final thoughts

To add an ads page to a site you already run, install Classified Listing. It charges through PayPal for free, and if the ads take off you can move to Classima without re-entering anything. Choose WPAdverts instead if you want the smallest change to your current design and three sites on one licence.

On a zero budget, with a developer to hand, HivePress and ListingHive go furthest for nothing.

Directorist makes sense when the classifieds are part of a business directory. AWP Classifieds suits a simple, text-led board with fees by duration, as long as you keep it updated.

When the board is the business and you plan to charge from day one, the yearly plugin licences add up, and a theme gets the paid features into one purchase. Classima, AdForest or our Classifieds theme cover that case.

FAQ

What is the best WordPress classifieds plugin?
For most sites, Classified Listing. It has 9,000+ active installs, a 4.8 rating, takes PayPal in the free version and has an upgrade path to the Classima theme. HivePress has the most free features but needs WooCommerce for payments and some code for changes.
Can I add classifieds to my existing WordPress site?
Yes, that is what the plugins are for. Classified Listing, WPAdverts and AWP Classifieds all work through shortcodes or blocks on pages of your current theme. A classifieds theme would replace your design, so it only makes sense when the ads are the whole site.
Can I charge for ads with a free plugin?
Yes. Classified Listing's free version takes PayPal and offline payments, AWP Classifieds charges through PayPal with fees by ad duration, and WPAdverts includes bank transfer. HivePress charges for free too, through WooCommerce. Card payments, featured ads and memberships usually need a paid plan.
Do WordPress classifieds plugins need WooCommerce?
HivePress does for any payment, and WPAdverts uses it for paid featured ads on its Professional plan. Classified Listing, Directorist and AWP Classifieds have their own checkout, and our Classifieds theme does not use WooCommerce at all.
Is AWP Classifieds safe to use?
The current version is. Two unauthenticated SQL injection flaws were published in 2026, affecting versions up to 4.4.5 and 4.4.7, and both were fixed. Run 4.4.9 or later and keep automatic updates on.
Can I move from a classifieds plugin to a theme later?
Yes, but ads stored by one plugin or theme don't appear in another on their own, so plan an export and import. Classified Listing to Classima is the exception, because Classima uses the same plugin.
How do I stop spam on a classifieds site?
Turn on moderation, add reCAPTCHA or another captcha, and require email verification before anyone can post. WPAdverts publishes ads straight away unless moderation is switched on, and one owner collected 700+ spam ads before finding the setting.
