Best WordPress News and Newspaper Themes in 2026 (Free and Paid)
By Mark Fail · · Updated

A news site asks more of a theme than a blog does. The front page changes several times a day. A breaking story has to sit in a ticker above the fold within minutes, and advertisers expect fixed 728x90 and 300x250 slots. After two years the archive holds thousands of posts, and they still have to load fast on a phone.
Some publishers also want part of that archive behind a paywall.
We looked at eight themes that can do this work. Five are paid and three are free from WordPress.org, because many people starting a local or niche paper want to know what a free theme leaves out.
On 28 September 2026 we loaded every demo, measured page weight in a desktop browser, and took the price, sales, rating and update date from each theme's own page. Sources are listed at the end.
Comparison table: eight news and newspaper themes
| Theme | Price | Page builder | Paywall option | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Newspaper | $59 | tagDiv Composer | Yes, via tagDiv Opt-In Builder | Large news sites with many sections |
| JNews | $59 | WPBakery or Elementor | Yes, bundled plugin | Subscription and pay-per-article sites |
| SmartMag | $69 | Elementor | No | Ad-funded magazines |
| Jannah | $69 | Own builder | No | Sites that want no third-party builder |
| Newsmag | $49 | tagDiv Composer | Email locker only | Cheapest premium option |
| ColorMag | Free, Pro from $69/yr | Blocks or Elementor | No | A free start with room to upgrade |
| Newsup | Free, Pro $59 | Widgets | No | Simple local news sites |
| Digital Newspaper | Free, Pro from $59/yr | Customizer | No | A newspaper look on no budget |
Newspaper

tagDiv's Newspaper has been on ThemeForest for 13 years and is still the first name most people give for a news site. The main demo has a weather and date bar, a header banner beside the logo, and a "Trending Now" ticker with arrow controls under the menu.
You build pages in tagDiv Composer, a front-end builder that only works with tagDiv themes. The ThemeForest page lists 120+ one-click demos plus a cloud library of more than 1,300 templates.
For income, the item page describes responsive AdSense and banner ads, including inline ads after a set number of paragraphs. tagDiv's Opt-In Builder plugin adds content lockers, subscription plans and credit-based access to posts. Readers pay through Stripe, PayPal or bank transfer. On our test load the demo home page made 44 requests and moved 921 KB, one of the lighter results here. It costs $59 and has 157,498 sales with a 4.80 rating. The last update was on 22 September 2026.
Pros
- More sales than any other theme in this list, so most problems have already been asked about
- Ticker, ad spots and a separate mobile theme are part of the package
- Subscriptions and pay-with-credits posts through Stripe or PayPal
- Light demo page weight for a theme this size
Cons
- tagDiv Composer layouts do not move to another theme if you switch later
- The number of settings takes a while to learn
- Check which Opt-In Builder features your licence covers before you plan revenue on it
JNews

If readers will pay you, look at JNews first. Its paywall plugin comes bundled with the theme and sells two kinds of WooCommerce product. One is a recurring subscription. The other is a one-off payment that opens a set number of articles. Payments go through PayPal or Stripe, and the Jegtheme documentation says WooCommerce has to be installed first.
Other bundled extras include autoload of the next post as the reader scrolls, split posts, and video and podcast plugins.
The News demo opens with a left column of latest and trending stories. There's a 728x90 slot above the lead story and a 300x250 in the sidebar. Of the paid themes, JNews loaded the most JavaScript on our test, with 462 KB of scripts across 70 requests. It costs $59 and has 30,047 sales with a 4.83 rating from about 1,000 reviews. It was last updated on 22 September 2026.
Pros
- Subscriptions and pay-per-article sales included with the theme
- 150+ homepage demos, including a breaking news layout
- Works with WPBakery, Elementor or the block editor
- Updated this month
Cons
- The paywall needs WooCommerce, which adds its own weight and upkeep
- More than 20 bundled plugins to keep updated
- More JavaScript than the other paid themes on our test
SmartMag

A lot of people find SmartMag by searching for its breaking news ticker. In the Classic demo it sits in the top bar with a red "Trending" label, to the left of the social icons and search box. You can change the label text in the theme settings. The changelog shows the ticker gained hover-pause in 2022 and more styling options in 2023.
Below it, the header holds a 728x90 ad block. The ThemeForest page lists ad and custom-code positions above and below the header, in the footer and on each single post.
SmartMag runs on Elementor and ships 64+ demos. It also has a separate AMP view made to look like the main site. There is no paywall of its own. Our test load of the Classic demo came to 59 requests and 912 KB. It costs $69 and has 22,235 sales with a 4.77 rating from 955 reviews, last updated on 22 September 2026.
Pros
- Header ticker and many fixed ad positions ready to use
- Built on Elementor, which many editors already know
- Includes a guide for Core Web Vitals scores
- Updated this month
Cons
- $10 more than Newspaper or JNews
- No built-in way to charge readers
- Elementor pages add their own CSS and scripts on top of the theme
Jannah

Jannah from TieLabs puts a red "Breaking News" ticker in the top bar next to the date. The menu bar carries a weather reading, a cart and a dark-mode switch.
It uses its own drag-and-drop page builder, so there is no Elementor or WPBakery to install. Caching and minified CSS and JavaScript are built in. The demo list runs to 25+ layouts, including Times, Tech, Sport and Travel variants.
BuddyPress and bbPress are supported if you want reader profiles or a forum. The item page shows no paywall feature. Updates also come more slowly than for the other themes, and the last one was six months ago. Jannah costs $69 and has 25,868 sales with a 4.79 rating from about 1,900 reviews. It was last updated on 3 April 2026.
Pros
- No third-party page builder to maintain
- Breaking news ticker and set ad sizes in every demo
- Community features through BuddyPress and bbPress
Cons
- Last updated in April 2026, the oldest update among the paid themes here
- The demo page was 1.3 MB on our test, heavier than Newspaper or SmartMag
- No paywall or subscription option
Newsmag

Newsmag is tagDiv's older and cheaper theme. It shares Newspaper's Composer builder and its "Trending Now" bar, but the layout is more boxed and there are 14 pre-built sites rather than 120.
The item page counts 16 ad spots. Its content locker asks for an email address rather than a payment. That suits a site built around a newsletter better than one built on subscriptions.
It was the heaviest demo in our test, at 83 requests, 1.67 MB and 773 KB of JavaScript, so plan some time for optimisation. Newsmag costs $49 and has 20,033 sales with a 4.81 rating from about 1,300 reviews. Version 5.4.3.8 came out on 25 September 2026.
Pros
- $10 cheaper than Newspaper with the same builder
- 16 ad positions listed on the item page
- Email content locker for building a newsletter list
- Updated last week
Cons
- Heaviest demo page we measured
- Far fewer demos than Newspaper
- No paid subscriptions
ColorMag (free)

ColorMag by ThemeGrill has more active installs than any other free theme we checked. To find the breaking news ticker, go to Appearance, Customize, Header, News Ticker. The free version gives you the on/off switch and shows the ticker in the top bar. Moving it below the menu, filtering it by category, or changing the label or the animation all need Pro.
You also get ad widget areas, 30+ starter demos and a Magazine Blocks plugin with 21 blocks for post layouts.
Be careful with the demo. Its home page moved 22.9 MB on our test because the demo images are uncompressed JPGs of up to 4 MB each. If you import the demo, compress them first.
Pro costs $69 a year for three sites or $279 for a lifetime licence. The free theme has 40,000+ active installs and a 4.9 rating from 1,566 reviews, and version 4.2.5 was released on 17 September 2026.
Pros
- Free, frequently updated, with a large base of reviews
- Ticker and ad widget areas work in the free version
- Uses the block editor, so layouts are not tied to a page builder
Cons
- Ticker position, filters and styling are Pro-only
- The demo images are huge and will slow your site if left as they are
- Pro is a yearly subscription unless you pay $279 up front
Newsup (free)

Of the free themes, Newsup from Themeansar looks the most like a traditional local news site. The demo has a live clock and date in the top bar, a banner ad beside the logo, a row of top tags, and a scrolling "Latest Post" ticker under the menu. The sidebar has Latest, Popular and Trending tabs. You manage all of it with widgets rather than a page builder.
Recent WordPress.org reviews mostly praise the developer's support, including for the Pro version. Pro costs $59 and adds colour schemes, typography settings and extra page templates.
The free theme has 20,000+ active installs and a 4.8 rating from 188 reviews. Version 5.6.2 was released on 28 September 2026, the day we checked.
Pros
- Ticker and header ad banner are in the free version
- Widget-based, so there is little to learn
- Very active development
Cons
- Typography and colour controls are Pro-only
- Fewer layout choices than ColorMag
- The demo page moved 2.8 MB on our test, mostly images
Digital Newspaper (free)

People look for Digital Newspaper by BlazeThemes with searches like "digital newspaper theme free download", and the free version is on WordPress.org. The demo has an orange "Headlines" ticker with thumbnails and a pause button. Under it is a three-column layout with Latest News, a large lead story and Popular News.
The free version is limited to one ticker layout, one ad block and five demos. Pro raises that to 12 demos and unlimited ad blocks.
By installs it is the smallest theme here. One recent WordPress.org thread reports a failed demo import with no reply from the developer after four weeks. Pro costs $59 a year for one site or $99 for a lifetime licence. The free theme has 3,000+ active installs and a 4.6 rating from 24 reviews, and version 1.1.18 was released on 13 February 2026.
Pros
- The most newspaper-like front page of the free themes
- Ticker with thumbnails in the free version
- Lifetime Pro licence for $99
Cons
- Only one ad block in the free version
- Small user base and an unanswered demo-import report
- No update since February 2026
Free or paid, speed and AMP
Every free theme above has a ticker and at least one ad area. For a new local site, that is enough.
You give up layout control and income tools. None of the three has a paywall. The free Digital Newspaper stops at one ad block, and ColorMag keeps its ticker settings for Pro. If you expect to sell subscriptions within a year, start on JNews or Newspaper. Changing theme later on a news site means rebuilding every category page.
Our speed numbers come from one load of each demo in a desktop browser. Use them to compare the themes, not as a promise, since demo sites carry their own images and hosting.
On a real news site the size of the archive matters more than the theme. Thousands of posts mean heavy database queries on category and tag pages, so good hosting and an object cache will help more than picking the lightest theme. Features such as autoload-next-post also add requests while the reader scrolls.
AMP matters less than it used to. Google stopped requiring AMP for its Top Stories carousel in 2021, and page experience signals such as Core Web Vitals now count for more. A fast normal page does the same job. Newspaper, JNews, SmartMag, Jannah and Newsmag still support AMP if you already use it.
Final Thoughts: which news theme should you pick?
For a busy news site with lots of sections, Newspaper is the safest bet. With 157,498 sales and an update last week, you are unlikely to hit a problem nobody has reported before.
If readers will pay, choose JNews. No other theme here sells subscriptions and per-article access with its own bundled plugin. You do have to run WooCommerce to use it.
SmartMag suits a site that earns mainly from ads, with its fixed ad positions, header ticker and Elementor editing. Jannah is for editors who do not want a third-party page builder and can live with its slower updates.
Newsmag at $49 is the cheapest paid choice, but its demo was the heaviest we measured.
If you want to start free, go with ColorMag. It has a clear path to Pro when you need more. Newsup is simpler and closer to a local-paper layout. Digital Newspaper has the most newspaper-like front page, but few people use it.
