Our experience with WP Engine
Popular due to many affiliates recommending their services. No real complaints from our users and hosting speeds are good, however support can be super slow.

Our take: fast platform, slower support
For a PremiumPress site, WP Engine is a real step up in hosting quality and speed compared with shared or budget hosting. PremiumPress support has not fielded meaningful complaints about it from customers who use it.
The trade-off is how quickly support responds, not how reliable the platform is. Several users report that the platform performs well and rarely has outages, but that a reply from WP Engine's support team can be noticeably slower than at the mainstream shared hosts on this list.
Factor that in if you need a fast answer on an urgent issue.
Pros
- Widely recommended
- Good hosting speeds

Cons

Our review, in detail
Who is WP Engine?
WP Engine is a managed WordPress hosting specialist. It is not a general host that happens to support WordPress. The company has been built entirely around WordPress since it was founded in Austin, Texas in 2010.
It started with 30 customers and a single product. It now employs over 1,000 WordPress-focused staff and, by its own estimate, powers roughly 8% of all WordPress sites visited online.
In 2019 it acquired Flywheel, another managed WordPress host. That brought the local development tool Local, the WP Migrate plugin and Advanced Custom Fields into its product family.
What managed hosting includes
"Managed" is the word that sets WP Engine apart from the shared hosts on this list. It handles backups, security monitoring, performance tuning and WordPress core updates as standard. You are not maintaining a server or chasing caching conflicts yourself.
The platform includes:
- Smart Plugin Manager, which tests plugin updates before applying them
- Ongoing site monitoring
- Global edge security that filters malicious traffic before it reaches your site
- Speed optimisation based on NitroPack
- AI-powered search tools for larger content sites
There are also specialised products for headless WordPress and for dedicated e-commerce hosting.
Pricing works differently from the shared hosts here. Every plan is billed by visits and storage, not as a flat fee per site. The entry-level tier is aimed at a small business with one site, and higher tiers add more visits, storage and staging as a site grows.
A PremiumPress directory with a lot of content but low traffic could end up cheaper on WP Engine than on a shared plan priced by storage. A busy auction or classifieds site should budget for the higher tiers as its visits climb.
Every plan includes free SSL, a CDN and automated nightly backups. Backups are kept for 30 to 60 days depending on the tier, which is longer than the 7 days common on many budget shared hosts.
Support runs 24/7 by live chat and ticket. Phone support and a named technical account manager are available on the higher tiers, for agencies managing several client sites.
Who it targets
WP Engine says it targets four groups:
- Agencies, through an Agency Partner Program with white-label options
- Enterprises, with a pitch built on the hidden cost of running WordPress infrastructure yourself at scale
- Small businesses, through more standard managed hosting plans
- Developers, who get full API access and detailed technical documentation for custom integrations

Plans are priced by monthly visits and storage rather than per site — budget for higher tiers if you expect an auction or classifieds site to grow quickly.
